Nields Crossing Dave Carter
by Nerissa Nields (7/23/2002)

Katryna and I heard about Dave Carter's death while we were driving from Davis, CA to Berkeley last Friday. We had to pull over in front of a gas station so we could cry, call our friends who knew and loved him, and then finally just sit still and try to take it in. I'm still trying. It seems, especially with Falcon Ridge looming ahead of us this weekend, like we lost a member of our family. Though neither of us knew him well, it felt like we did. We were fans. We were fan of his writing, fans of Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, fans of that beautiful music they weave together. And who among us could resist that sweet Southern grin, that leonine demeanor, that unbounding enthusiasm for life and music. We are honored to be a part of a tribute to Dave's songs this Saturday at Falcon Ridge. It is such a blessing that we will be able to be among people who knew and loved him. Nothing can take away the sadness, but being together in the grief gives us a place to put the sadness. A home.

As always, when someone beloved dies, I am reminded of how short and unpredictable, precious, messy and fine life is. Thank you Dave, for being part of mine. Thank you, all of you who are part of this quirky noble community, for being part, for taking part.

May we all live well.
